Dat ook onze hedendaagse wereld te maken heeft met corruptie, geweld en oorlog kunnen wij maar moeilijk aanvaarden. Het liefst zouden wij gelvoen dat al dit kwaad letterlijk onmenselijk is. De gedragswetenschappen proberen dan ook aan te tonen dat de mens in veel gevallen niet verantwoordelijk kan zijn voor het door hem aangerichte kwaad. Daartegenover staat de opvatting van hen die menen dat het kwaad een zelfstandige macht is waartegen de morele verontwaardigign niets kan ondernemen. Uitgaande van een concrete situatie laat de auteur zien dat het begrijpen van een misdaad toch niet de morele verontwaardiging ongedaan kan maken. Daarbij stelt hij de vraag naar de relatie van de twee. De Visscher behoort niet tot de optimisten die menen dat de mens ooit het kwaad in zich zal kunnen uitroeien. Het kwaad bestaat en we zullen ermee moeten leven. Maar dat brengt wel mee dat het kwaad moet worden aangeklaagd en bestreden. Volgens hem is dat alleen mogelijk door de morele kritiek en door de grondige zorg voor de menselijke waardigheid die hij in de liefde en de sociale rechtvaardigheid weerspiegeld ziet. Dit zijn voor hem de wegen van de hoop op bevrijding. Via het probleem van het kwaad wordt hier de vraag gesteld: 'wat is het ethische?'. De Visscher weet, geïnspireerd door het bijbelse paradijsverhaal en de filosofie van Immanuel Kant, overtuigend aan te tonen dat dit een van de kernproblemen van onze tijd is.
